Digitization is a big part of the Budget 2024-25 accounting for its Viksit Bharat goals. The new Finance Bill broadly advocates TDS return filing online in a bid to conglomerate and improve tax compliance and isolate system anomalies. The sooner taxpayers get used to the online processes, it will improve the clarity of statutory audits and pave the way for real-time reporting.

eTDS return filing is not yet mandatory in India. There aren’t any specific eligibility criteria either. Even without government intervention or mandates, taxpayers can see the benefits of using the online portal instead of manually assessing physical records.

Not everyone is equally comfortable with using a computer to file for their TDS return online. Some taxpayers would only choose to go by the traditional ways because it is their habit. However, the online procedure is bent on offering the simplicity and convenience that they have been always looking for.

TDS Filing Mandates and Eligibility

The Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) returns are mandatory for individuals and businesses making certain types of income from certain types of streams. The current TDS rates range between 1% and 30% of the income, which is deducted from the payment source.

The TDS returns outline all transactions every quarter. All submitted TDS returns are disclosed as an annual statement in Form 26AS, uploaded in the TRACES portal. In the case that you have paid more than the actual liability, you are eligible for an income tax TDS refund.

The online process makes tax compliance easier for both the taxpayer and the deductor by offering a cohesive and centralized system. Below are some of the key income streams are eligible for TDS:

    • Individual’s salary income paid by an employer

    • Businesses acquiring the Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN)

    • Insurance premiums and payouts exceeding

    • Income from securities like stocks, bonds, provident funds and similar types of debentures

    • Earnings from the National Savings Certificates (NSC)

    • Winnings from lotteries, horse racing, and online games
